What This Man Does To Elderly Patients…I Can’t Believe It!
When Jared Axen became a nurse, he would sing in the hallways as he was going about his rounds, passing out medications and getting his work done. “I didn’t really think about it,” he said, but patients would find themselves getting out of bed and coming into the hallway to listen to him. That’s when he realized that there was another way that he could start caring for patients in a way that went above and beyond what was expected of them.
His patients call him the “Angel sent from Heaven” because he lessens their pain and lifts their moods just by giving them that little bit of extra care and attention. Singing anything from classic hymns to Frank Sinatra, Jared writes on his blog that “…hospice is not about giving up.”
It shows that his method helps, too, in that patients need less pain killers and mood stabilizers just by receiving those extra few minutes of personal care from their favorite nurse. Sitting with them and really focusing on the patients keeps them happier and healthier than just “switching on the tv” like so many other nurses do.
While I’ve still got a ways to go, I hope that I can be treated in my final days by someone as kind and talented as nurse Jared Axen! Listen to him comfort Norma and watch as he brings her to tears of happiness and relief.
