Have you ever had your own duckling? If you haven’t, that’s alright! This clever video will give you a snapshot of what it feels like – from triumphantly hatching out of it’s tiny shell to running after “mama” in the parking lot!

Ducks have a strange attribute (as do certain other fowl) to imprint on the first thing that they see. In the wild, this means that the first thing they see will be their mama duck who will care for them and teach them to grow up as the best duck they can be! For ducklings who don’t hatch and see their mother, ducklings have been known to attach themselves to grown men, young children, and even cats or dogs! While this can be confusing for a 12 pound Yorkie, to the duckling, it is the only life they know.

Like any pet, a duck is a big commitment – and if that duckling attaches itself to you (congratulations, “mom!”) then you have to be patient with your new constant (and adorable) companion. The most important thing about ducks is that you can’t have only one! Ducklings need to be around other ducks to really thrive as a pet. While you are a great part of their lives, no one really understands a duck like…well, another duck!

Ducks love water, too! Keep your ducks in a safe area with a strong fence and if possible, a small pool! Ducks are natural prey in the wild, so watch out for foxes and other predators who might want to snack on your new best friend.

If you don’t want a duck, that’s fine! Just watch this one grow up – it’s so cute. Really.
